About the wirehaired Podengo Portugues

Summary

  • Belgian Shepherd Malinois is a hard-working, alert and easily trained breed that needs a lot of activation both physically and mentally.
  • The breed matures late, around the age of three, and is known for being healthy and long-lived.
  • Belgian Shepherd Malinois comes in four varieties: Tervueren, Malinois, Laekenois and Groenendael, with different coat lengths and colors.
  • The breed is medium-sized, well-proportioned, square and has a harmonious build.
  • The fur work is minimal, as the high-quality fur “grooms” itself to a large extent.

History

Belgian Shepherd Malinois, along with Groenendael, Laekenois and Tervuren, were established as breeds in 1891. From being herding dogs, they have developed into versatile working and family dogs. Professor A. Reul in Belgium became interested in creating a Belgian Sheepdog breed at the end of the 19th century. The breed club decided to standardize the various varieties in 1899 and 1907.

Characteristics and mentality

Belgian Shepherd Malinois is a lively, happy, alert and attentive breed. It is intelligent, easy to learn and willing to work. It is important to give it enough outlets for its energy and willingness to work to avoid it becoming a “problem dog”. Environmental training and socialization in the first year of life is essential. Towards the owner, it is soft and loving, but it can be disinterested towards unknown people.

Size and appearance

The breed should be medium-sized, well-proportioned, square and combine elegance and power. It has dry, strong muscles and is hardy. The four varieties – Groenendael, Malinois, Laekenois and Tervuren – have the same standard, but different coats. The Groenendael has long, black fur. Malinois has short, reddish-yellow fur with black hair tips and a black mask. Laekenois have rough hair and dry fur with a reddish-yellow color and black hair tips. The Tervuer is long-haired with reddish-yellow or gray fur, black hair tips and a black mask.

Fur work

The fur work for the Belgian Shepherd Malinois is minimal, as the high-quality fur “grooms” itself to a large extent. It is recommended to bathe the dog when necessary and brush it a couple of times a month, more often during shedding periods. If you wish to learn more about the breed, it is recommended to contact the Belgian Shepherd Malinois Breed Club. The RAS document also provides information on the breed’s health and the club’s focus when it comes to breeding. The breed standard describes the breed’s physical and mental characteristics and is recommended reading for those considering getting a puppy of this breed.Good luck!
