History
The Weimaraner is named after the city of Weimar in Germany. The breed’s ancestors were bred by Grand Duke Karl August of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach in the 18th century. It is believed that the Weimaraner is a cross between various German Dusters, Game Trackers and Pointers.The breed was further developed on German princely estates in the 19th century and became a popular hunting dog. The Weimaraner was recognized as a separate breed in 1896 and is found in both short-haired and long-haired varieties, with the short-haired being more common.Characteristics/Mentality
The Weimaraner is a versatile, easy-going and stable hunting dog with a passionate searching nature. It is known for its excellent sense of smell and is also used as a tracking and search dog.The breed is reliable on land and in water, and shows good qualities for work after the shot. The Weimaraner also works well as a guard dog and has been used in police work and as a draft dog.Size/Appearance
The Weimaraner has a muscular, rectangular body with fluid and ground-winning movements. The eyes are round with a color that varies from light to dark amber. The breed has a strong back, strong chest and well-angled front and hind legs.The tail is set low and is carried hanging at rest, but is raised during movement and during work. What makes the Weimaraner special is its unique color. Genetically, it has a bleached liver brown color that gives the impression of pale gray or mouse gray with silver flecks.The Weimaraner’s wither height varies between 59-70 cm for males (ideally 62-67 cm) and 57-65 cm for bitches (ideally 59-63 cm).Fur grooming
