Work to develop the breed began around 1850 as a result of changes in the German hunting law and growing interest in hunting. The dogs used had a good sense of smell, versatile hunting skills and retrieving skills. The Löns brothers discovered standing quail dogs in the Munsterland area of Germany. These dogs had different characteristics, and the work to breed good hunting dogs began. Interest in the breed led to the formation of the German Munsterlander Club in 1912.
