About the Silky Terrier

Briefly about the breed:

  • Silky terriers are a happy and energetic breed with toughness and intelligence.
  • The breed is a good companion dog and has a softer temperament than many other terriers.
  • Historically, the silky terrier was developed by crossing different breeds.
  • The Silky terrier is a typical terrier with eagerness, vigilance and health.
  • The breed has a compact body, silky smooth fur and noble appearance.

History:

The Silky Terrier is a breed of uncertain origin, but it is believed to have been developed by crossing different terriers. A bitch was taken from Tasmania to England, where she was later mated with a dandie dinmont terrier. The puppies were then taken to Australia, where they were mated with Yorkshire terriers. This offspring got a silky coat. The breed developed differently in different states and had different standards.

Characteristics and temperament:

The Silky terrier is a happy and energetic dog with toughness, curiosity and intelligence. It is willing to learn, faithful and has a generally softer temperament than other terriers. The breed is eager, alert, active and healthy. It is a brave and dignified toy terrier that is outstanding as a companion dog.

Size and appearance:

The Silky Terrier has a compact body, moderately low height (23-26 cm) and medium length with a noble build. The breed must have sufficient mass to hunt and kill mice and rats. The coat is straight, silky and gives a well-groomed appearance.

Health:

The Silky Terrier is generally a healthy breed, but some health problems can occur. Legg-Perthes disease and patellar luxation are known conditions, and breeding animals should be checked before breeding. There can also be a certain degree of lack of teeth in the breed.

Fur care:

The coat of the silky terrier requires care, whether it is a show dog or companion dog. Brushing the coat once or twice a week is recommended to keep it well-groomed. Some equipment is required.
