Characteristics and Mentality
Pumi is a lively, easily trained and brave dog. Like many herding dogs, it is full of eagerness to work, but it also thrives in a warm arm corner on the sofa. Pumi can be suspicious and wary of strangers, so socialization from a young age is important. It may be vocal, but it is possible to teach it when and where to bark.Size and Appearance
Pumi is a medium-sized dog with a distinct terrier character. It has characteristically lively and movable ears, with the front third tipping forward. The fur is wavy and curly.Colors can vary and include grey, white, black and fawn (red, yellow or cream base color with traces of grey/black and distinct mask). The eyes should be dark brown and oval.Health:
The Pumi is generally a healthy breed, but hip and elbow dysplasia (HD/AD) and patellar luxation can occur. The breed should be screened for the eye disease RD before breeding.Fur care:
The pumi requires regular brushing and clipping, as it is a shedding-free dog. The length of the fur is usually around 12-15 cm. If necessary, it can also be bathed.History – From Puli to Pumi:
The Pumi was first mentioned in 1815 and is considered a separate breed from the 18th century. Its origins are somewhat unclear, but it is believed to be the result of cross-breeding between Puli, German Spitz, Briard and various terrier breeds. These dogs were imported to Hungary together with flocks of sheep. Only at an exhibition in 1920 was the Pumi recognized as a separate breed, separated from the Puli. In 1966, the breed was approved by the FCI.Resources from Raseklubben:
