History
The Newfoundland dog originated on the island of Newfoundland, where it developed over centuries with the influence of local dogs and “Viking dogs” brought to the area by Leif Eirikson in the 11th century. These large, black, bear-like dogs actually existed in Viking settlements in the area.The Newfoundland dog also interbred with local dogs and water dogs belonging to the Native American tribes of the region. During the isolation on the island, the breed developed into a special dog with the ability to work both on land and in water.Characteristics and Mentality
The Newfoundland dog is known for its gentle and friendly temperament. The breed has a great fondness for water and are excellent swimmers. The Newfoundland dog is a large dog with a height at the withers of approx. 71 cm for male dogs and 66 cm for bitches. Despite its size, it is agile. The breed has a dense, water-repellent coat that comes in three approved colours: black, brown and white/black.Fur grooming
