Characteristics and temperament

The miniature poodle is not only an excellent companion dog, but also a versatile dog with good practical qualities. It thrives on mental training such as tracking and search work. The breed is characterized by its good temperament and is often easily learned. Many poodles are used today as guide dogs for the blind and assistance dogs for the disabled. Size and weight

The miniature poodle is a harmonious and well-balanced dog with a square build and healthy movements. It has an intelligent expression, is alert and active. The breed comes in four size variants: large, medium, dwarf and toy. For the dwarf poodle, the height at the withers is between 28 and 35 cm. The breed should have the proportions of the intermediate poodle and should not show signs of dwarfism. The coat is characteristically frizzy and comes in the colors black, white, brown, grey, apricot and red. A normal weight for a dwarf poodle is between 3-7kg.

Fur grooming

Even if you have no plans to exhibit your dog, it is important to be prepared for some fur care when you own a miniature poodle. The fur is frizzy and needs regular grooming to keep it nice. When the poodle is cut and styled in the traditional lion cut, it radiates pride and dignity. Poodles do not shed and are therefore suitable for people with allergies.

History

The poodle is an old breed with roots dating back to the early Middle Ages. The origin of the breed is not entirely clear, but it is believed that it may have been developed through crosses of old hunting dogs with the puli breed, an active and easily trained herding dog with curly fur. The poodle is recognized as a French breed, and the large poodle is the oldest variety. In the 16th century, the miniature version already existed in Italy. Today there are different size variants of the poodle, including the miniature poodle.
