History

The straight-haired Dachshund originated in Germany, and the word “dachs” means badger. In Norway, it was previously called badger dog. The breed has developed from duster dogs with short legs on an otherwise normal skeletal structure. The dwarf dachshund should be long, low, muscular and not limited by its particular body shape. The dachshund’s history can be traced back to the Middle Ages, where it was bred from duster breeds that were particularly suitable for hunting. From these short-legged dogs arose the dwarf dachshund, which in modern times is recognized as one of the most versatile and useful hunting dogs worldwide.

Characteristics and mentality

The miniature dachshund is used today as a hunting dog, driving dog, tracking and search dog. It is a first choice for deer hunting and is a skilled game finder that operates at a comfortable pace for both the game and the hunter. The breed also works well as a family dog and walking companion. At exhibitions, it likes to show its energy, charm and radiance, and it is not unusual to see it among the best in the competition. The Dachshund can also participate in various hunting tests and blood trace tests, which give the right to championship. It is also welcome at dog shows and competes in national championships in tracks against other breeds. The Dachshund is an active and fun family dog. It tends to select its own acquaintances and treats them as “personal friends”. It likes to make full use of this status. The breed settles into its surroundings and likes to have an overview of the territory by lying high. When it needs rest, it prefers to lie under or inside something, preferably hidden under the duvet. For the miniature dachshund to be obedient and sociable, a determined and consistent owner is required. Due to its inherent hunting instinct, it is not always recommended to let it loose during walks.

Size and appearance

The Dachshund comes in nine different breed varieties based on size and three layers of hair: straight-haired, long-haired and short-haired. The breed is below medium size, and the largest variety should weigh around 9 kg according to the breed standard. The smaller varieties are classified according to the chest measurement, where the rabbit dachshund can have a chest circumference of up to 30 cm, and the dwarf dachshund can measure from 30 to 35 cm.In terms of coat, the straighthair has a smooth, dense and wiry coat with undercoat that covers the entire body, except for the muzzle, eyebrows and ears. The longhair has a smooth, shiny and attached coat with undercoat, especially on the neck, underside of the body, ears and with a full plume on the tail. The shorthair has a short, dense, shiny and attached coat with no visible bare spots. The tail has a covering coat, but not too much, and some long guard hairs on the underside are not unusual.

Health

The Dachshund is generally a healthy breed that has a good life expectancy. Spinal prolapse occurs more frequently in dachshunds compared to other breeds, and NDF attaches great importance to taking this into account in the breeding work. The eye disease PRA (progressive retinal atrophy) has previously been a focus, but the incidence is now very low. Many still choose to have the dogs’ eyes examined before breeding. Other health aspects are described in the RAS document (Breed-specific breeding strategies).

Fur grooming

The dwarf dachshund rarely has problems with its coat and sheds normally in spring and autumn. Breeders can provide guidance on how to care for the coat. In general, you can say that short-haired people need a stiff brush and cleaning cloth, long-haired people need a fine-toothed metal comb, and streaky people need a carder and a dull trimming knife. Short-haired and long-haired varieties require minimal grooming, while brindle-haired varieties must be trimmed and brushed regularly.
