History

The Maltese is considered Italian, but has roots from Asia. It has been depicted since the 9th century BC. in the Mediterranean countries. Originally, the Maltese was spotted, black, sand, fawn and white, but white became the only approved color from 1904. The breed came to Norway in the 1950s.

Characteristics and mentality

The Maltese is a happy and affectionate dog that needs socialization and learning of boundaries. It is lively, calm and intelligent, and makes a great companion and family dog. Many people choose to cut their fur short.

Size and appearance

The Maltese is small with an elongated body and long, white fur. It has an elegant stance with a proud head. The height at the withers is between 21-25 cm for male dogs and 20-23 cm for bitches, and the weight is around 3-4 kilos.

Fur grooming

Most people choose to cut the Maltese’s fur short, either with some length or machine-cut completely short on the body. Regular brushing and combing is necessary to avoid felting. The fur should be cut approx. 4 times a year, and even short-cut fur requires regular bathing and grooming.
