About the Keeshond

Briefly about the breed

  • The Keeshond is a variant of the German spitz (German spitz) and a spitz that likes to make a bit of noise.
  • The breed is easy to learn and fun to work with, and regular grooming is necessary.
  • Keeshond is suitable both as a family and company dog, as well as in dog sports such as agility and obedience.

History

The history of the Keeshonden is fascinating, with the nobility in the 18th century employing it as a fashionable dog, while among the common people it was used as a guard dog. The origin of Keesen’s name can be traced back to civil war-like conditions in the Netherlands in the 1780s.

Characteristics/Mentality

Keeshond is attentive, lively and very devoted to its owner. The breed is willing to learn, easy to raise and is well suited as a guardian of property. It is neither anxious nor aggressive, and tolerates different weather conditions well. The Keeshond has robust health and a long lifespan.

Size/Appearance

The Keeshond has a silver gray color with black hair tips. It has a beautiful coat that stands out from the body due to the abundant undercoat. The breed has a strong collar around the neck and a bushy tail that is carried proudly over the back. The fox-like head, the quick eyes and the pointed, small ears give the breed a handsome appearance. The ratio between withers height and length should be 1:1, and it has an appropriate weight in relation to its size.

Fur grooming

The Keeshonden requires weekly brushing and more frequent brushing during shedding.
