History

The hygen dog was named after procurator Hans Fredrik Hygen, a breeder who bred local dusters in Ringerike for hare hunting. The breed has been maintained as a small breed and has sometimes been crossed with other breeds to ensure fresh breeding material. It is recommended to increase the number of newly registered puppies to ensure the breed’s survival without inbreeding problems.

Characteristics/Mentality

The Hygen Hound is known for its characteristic sound in its voice and uses its voice in various ways to signal the distance of the prey to the hunter. It is a capable hare dog with a friendly disposition, easy to train, and shows a good hunting appetite. As a family dog, it is usually calm and easy to keep in the house, and it is obedient and easy to train.

Size/Appearance

The hygen dog should be medium-sized and powerful without being heavy. Male dogs have a height of 50-58 cm, while bitches have a height of 47-55 cm. The ears are pendulous and of medium length, and the tail reaches the hocks with a curved shape. The coat is dense and smooth, and all color combinations are allowed, although the most common is red with white markings.

Fur grooming

Minimal grooming is required for the hygen dog.
