History
The Hamilton Hound is a Swedish breed named after Adolf Patrik Hamilton, who was a keen hare hunter. The breed has roots going back to the 1890s, but was first named Hamiltonstøver in 1921. The breed has had significant influence from Swedish breeders such as Otto Dahl, Bisseberg Larsen, Lilleberget and later Arnt Grøttum and LO Kjellemo. From the middle of the 20th century onwards, the breed has continued to grow in popularity.Characteristics and mentality
The Hamilton Hound is friendly with a calm temperament. It has a great desire to hunt, but is also easy to mark. A special feature is that it is easy to train to be deer-pure, and some individuals show no interest in other prey. The Hamilton Hound has a robust and nervous temperament and rarely shows nervousness. It is generally obedient, kind and a calm family dog, but may have a low tolerance for individuals of the same sex.Size and appearance
The Hamilton Hound has a rectangular, three-coloured body and is well built without being heavy. It gives the impression of great strength and endurance. The height at the withers for male dogs is 53-61 cm (ideal height 57 cm) and for bitches is 49-57 cm (ideal height 53 cm).Fur grooming
The Hamilton Hound has a rough and attached coat that should not be too short. The fur is short and smooth on the head, ears and front of the legs. On the back of the thighs and under the tail, the fur can be longer. The fur is easy to care for and should be bathed when necessary.Do you want to learn more about the breed?
