History

The Griffon Bruxellois, along with the Griffon Belge and Petit Brabançon, descends from a Belgian dog breed known as the “Smousje”. Originally used as rat catchers and guardians of horse-drawn carriages, the breed was later influenced by the King Charles spaniel and pug to give it its distinctive appearance. At first the short-haired puppies were seen as undesirable, but they were later recognized as the Petit Brabançon breed. The griffons had their heyday in the 1890s and received royal interest from Queen Marie-Henriette of Belgium. The breed was exported out of Belgium and has been rebuilt after the Second World War.

Characteristics/Mentality

The Griffon Bruxellois is a balanced and alert dog with a strong attachment to its owner. It is alert, but not shy or aggressive. The breed is known for its friendliness and loyalty.

Size/Appearance

The breed is small, intelligent and harmoniously built. It usually weighs between 3.5-6 kg. The griffons attract attention with their human-like expression. The variations in the breed are mainly in color and coat, with the Griffon Belge in black and black/tan, the Griffon Bruxellois in red, and the Petit Brabançon in red, black and black/tan. The breed can be bred across variants, and puppies can have different colors in the same litter.

Health

Griffons are generally healthy and robust dogs with good physical condition. Common health problems include patellar problems, eye injuries and urinary stones. Regular follow-up with a veterinarian is recommended.
