About the Greyhound

  • Grows quickly and is vulnerable during growth
  • Originally used for hunting, retains the hunting instinct
  • Combines power, elegance and agile movements

History

The Greyhound has an aristocratic history and has been reserved for the English nobility for several centuries. It has roots that go back to the Middle East and North Africa, and was highly valued in ancient Greece. The dogs were further taken to the Roman Empire and to today’s England. In the 4th century, the breed had gained a solid foothold in the British Isles, and it was mentioned in writings as early as the 8th century.

Characteristics/Mentality

The Greyhound is originally a hunting dog, but today also works as an excellent companion dog. It was used for hunting where it alone hunted and killed its prey, and it is still equipped with a well-developed hunting instinct. The greyhound is loyal and strongly attached to its owner. As a puppy, it is open, happy, brave and not destructive.Indoors, an adult greyhound will be calm and hardly noticeable as long as it gets regular exercise and activity. The training focuses on desirable behaviour, and the greyhound usually allows itself to be guided with moderate and positive means. The most important thing is that the dog gets to participate in as much as possible and is treated kindly and respectfully.

Size/Appearance

The Greyhound’s appearance is characterized by a combination of power, elegance and agile movements. The fur is short and dense, and the most common colors are black, brindle (tiger) and red, either plain or with markings on a white background. The size varies, but the height at the withers follows the standard of 71-76 cm for male dogs and 68-71 cm for bitches.

Fur grooming

Minimal grooming is required for the greyhound. Bathing is carried out when necessary, and some shedding can be expected.
