About the Giant Schnauzer

Summary:

  • Schnauzer black is a good-natured, playful and loyal dog with an energetic temperament.
  • The breed is persistent and willing to learn, but needs clear and fair rules.
  • The Schnauzer has a natural guardian instinct and can be reserved towards strangers.
  • It is important to set aside time for training, as the breed is easy to learn, but can get bored. Short sessions are preferable.

History:

The Schnauzer originated as a farm and stable dog for southern German farmers in Bavaria, near the border with Austria. The dogs are first mentioned in literature in 1842. They had tasks such as guarding and pest control, and were watchful, loyal and robust companions.

Characteristics and mentality:

The Schnauzer is energetic and at the same time sane, with a good-natured character. It is playful and very loyal. The breed is child-loving, incorruptible and alert without being grumpy. The dogs have developed sensory organs, are wise, willing to learn and have good endurance and resistance to disease. The Schnauzer is an excellent guard, working and family dog.

Size and appearance:

Schnauzer black has a height at the withers of 45-50 cm and weighs between 14-20 kg. The fur is striated, hard and dense, with a dense undercoat and cover hair. The head and ears have shorter fur. The beard is typically not too soft, and the eyebrows are bushy and easily shade the eyes. The breed comes in two color variants: plain black with black undercoat and pepper and salt.

Fur care:

The Schnauzer’s coat should be trimmed around four times a year and preferably brushed weekly. Good coat care reduces shedding.
