History
The Dunker breed, named after Captain Wilhelm Conrad Dunker, has an interesting history dating back to the first half of the 19th century. Captain Dunker crossed various duster breeds to develop a special hare dog. In 1902, the “Special Club for Norwegian Harehounds” was established, and the harehounds were divided into two main groups: dunker and hygenhund.Breeding was wide and diverse, but one of the distinctive features that has been preserved through the ages is the “droplet” (gray moldy) color and blue-white iris (“glass eyes”), although other colors are also allowed according to the standard. After World War II, interest in Dunker Puppies waned, but in the 1980s the breed experienced a surge in popularity. Nevertheless, inbreeding led to the dogs becoming too closely related. In 1987, an application was made for interbreeding with other breeds to improve genetic variation and health, and although the application was refused, the breed was later given permission for some interbreeding in 1989. This has helped to preserve the good characteristics and improve the breed’s genetic health.Characteristics and temperament
The Dunker is recognized as an excellent hare dog that works closely with its owner during the hunt. It has strong paws that withstand ice and crowds, and its strong nerves enable it to cope with demanding hunting conditions. The dunker is also known for his good nature, friendliness and trusting nature. It is easy to train and can therefore be a great combination of hunting and family dog.Look
The Dunker breed has a medium-sized body with a distinctly rectangular shape. The head has good length, a slightly domed skull with a marked nape and a clear but not deep or sharp stop. The ears are set medium high and hanging. Iris can have different colors at “drippy” dogs. The tail is of medium length and is carried straight or slightly raised and curved. The fur is straight, wiry and dense, and it requires minimal grooming.Want to learn more before you buy a dunker puppy?
