History of the Cocker Spaniel

The Cocker Spaniel is one of several spaniel varieties that share the same origin. Originally, the breed was used as an offensive bird dog in the British Isles, and later it was also used to raise birds and other small game within shooting distance. The breed was officially recognized in 1905 and received its first standard in the English Kennel Club. The Cocker Spaniel is the most famous of all the spaniel varieties and has become widespread all over the world. Although it is used to a lesser extent as a hunting dog today, it is primarily a popular family dog. There is, however, a so-called “working” variant of the breed, where the breeding has been focused on hunting qualities and deviated somewhat from the breed standard in terms of appearance. This variety is mainly owned by those who have a special interest in hunting and hunting trials, as well as by police and customs who use them as drug and bomb dogs.

Hunting Cocker Spaniel

The Cocker Spaniel is a versatile and eager hunting dog that has a rich history as a reliable companion for hunters. With their original purpose of hunting birds, especially woodcock, they have proven their prowess in the hunting field. These dogs have good retrieving skills and are known to be able to work closely with the hunter in varied terrain. Their curiosity, energy and willingness to work make them great hunting partners who can also adapt as pets in the home. Cocker Spaniels are known for their scenting and searching skills, as well as their ability to retrieve prey from water or terrain. Their cooperation and obedience are essential for effective hunting. With proper training and early socialization, a hunting Cocker Spaniel can prove to be a faithful companion on your hunting adventures.

Characteristics and mentality

The Cocker Spaniel has a neat size, a sporty nature, good disposition and beautiful appearance. The breed is suitable for both the city and the countryside. Despite their handy size and coat, many individuals still retain their original instincts as a pouncing and retrieving bird dog. It is therefore important to treat the Cocker Spaniel as a dog and not as a “couch pig”. These dogs need regular exercise and mental stimulation. One must never forget that this is a hunting dog.

Size and appearance

The Cocker Spaniel should exude strength and endurance. The height at the withers is around 40 cm. The leg should be relatively strong in relation to the dog’s size, and the legs should have round, thick and cat-like paws. This is a long-haired breed, with feathers on the belly, chest, back of the legs and on the ears. The rest of the body has rather short and smooth fur that lies close to it. Many Cockers today have abundant fur, especially on the front of their limbs. All fur colors are availableatt, but plain-colored dogs must not have white markings, even if a white spot on the chest is accepted.

The colors of the Cocker Spaniel

The Cocker Spaniel is known for its varied coat color, which gives each dog a unique appearance. The colors include black, ash, brown, gold, red and party colors that combine different shades. Regardless of color, the Cocker Spaniel has a friendly and affectionate nature that makes them great companions. The coat color does not affect their personality or ability to be faithful and loving dogs in the home.

Fur grooming

The Cocker Spaniel requires a lot of grooming. Regular brushing, bathing and clipping are necessary to keep the coat tangle-free and well-groomed. It takes effort to keep a Cocker in good coat condition. The dog’s well-being is always the most important thing, so a family dog that is not used for exhibition can be cut in a shorter hairstyle, which makes it easier to keep the fur clean and free of tangles.Good luck!Supporting sources:Wikipedia , Wildlife , Norwegian Spaniel Club
