History
The Bullmastiff originated in England and can trace its history back around 150 years. The breed was bred through a successful cross between the large mastiff and the small bulldog. At the time, the English upper class were fond of hunting and released large quantities of game in the areas surrounding their manors. The Bullmastiff was developed as a “Game keeper’s night dog” – a forest ranger’s faithful companion. The breed combined great strength, agility, silence and sufficient speed to capture and hold down a poacher without harm. Even today, the Bullmastiff has kept these instincts intact and is a good example of the forest guard dog of the time.Characteristics and mentality
The Bullmastiff is not only known for its impressive size and strength, but also for its calm and loving nature. The breed rarely barks and lacks the hunting instincts of a driving dog.As an independent working dog, the Bullmastiff has developed great self-confidence, and this makes it a safe and loving companion. It is ideal as a companion dog and provides a warm and tender presence.Size and appearance
The Bullmastiff is a dog with great strength and impressive appearance, while avoiding appearing bulky. The head is of great importance for the overall impression. The circumference of the skull and neck should be equal to the height of the withers. The nose is short, and the length should be one third of the entire length from the tip of the muzzle to the tubercle. Seen from the front, the nose should be wide. The breed is also characterized by a dark mask that covers the nose area and the area around the eyes. The ears are small and V-shaped with a darker color than the rest of the body. The eyes are dark or hazel, medium in size and wider apart than the width of the nose.Male dogs have a withers height of 63.5-68.5 cm, while bitches have a withers height of 61-66 cm. The weight varies from 50-59 kg for male dogs and 41-50 kg for bitches. The coat must be short and dense, and all shades of red, fawn (yellow) and brindle (tiger) are allowed.Fur grooming
The Bullmastiff has a short, dense coat that requires minimal grooming. Regular brushing and bathing when necessary is sufficient to keep the coat in good condition. The breed sheds heavily at times, so it can be useful to check the eyes, ears, skin folds and mucous membranes daily to maintain good health. The breed club
