History

Norsk Elghund Sort is an old breed that has developed from local spitz dog breeds in the border areas between Norway and Sweden. It has existed as an independent breed since the mid-1800s. The black moose dog is the smallest of the moose dog breeds and is a typical spitz dog. It is known for its calm nature and strong attachment to family. In the past, it was valued for its qualities as a fearless and mentally strong dog in close animal contact and bear hunting. The breed has proven particularly well suited as a band dog, and through careful breeding it has become an expert in this form of hunting. At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, the black moose dog was widespread, especially in eastern parts of Norway, where it was used to hunt moose and bears. By the mid-1950s, the breed was almost extinct, but thanks to dedicated enthusiasts who bred the best specimens, the population began to grow steadily again.Today, the annual registration number for puppies is between 180 and 220. Although the black moose dog is still the “little brother” of the gray moose dog, there is now a strong strain of the breed in Norway. Norwegian Elghund Black is one of Norway’s seven national breeds and has a limited distribution in the rest of the world. There is a small population in Sweden, and some specimens of the breed can also be found in Germany, Estonia and the USA.
