It was then brought back to the European continent by seafarers, where it became a popular pet among Spanish and Italian nobles.During the French invasion of Italy in the 15th century, the bichon frisé was taken as booty by the French. The breed experienced its greatest popularity under Henry III (1574-1589), who always wanted to be with his dogs. The bichon frisé was loved by the king and was carried around his neck in a basket while performing his royal duties. However, several hundred years later, the bichon frisé experienced a decline in popularity. During the French Revolution, both nobles and their pets suffered the same fate, and many were put to death. Banished to the streets, the breed was often seen with jugglers and circus groups performing tricks. Despite this, the bichon frise retained its lively nature and fun demeanor.Soldiers returning from World War I brought the dogs home as pets. In 1977, the first bichons came to Norway, and since then the breed has become very popular. Each year approximately 400-500 bichon frisé dogs are registered in Norway.
