Characteristics/Mentality

The Bedlington Terrier is generally a stable, calm and controlled dog with a balanced temperament. Many choose it as their first dog, and it often works well. It is said to be intelligent enough to tolerate minor errors in upbringing without catastrophic consequences.With good upbringing, the Bedlington Terrier grows up to become a positive, open and happy family dog with many good qualities. The breed is trainable for many different tasks, but it is important to take into account its sensitive nature and treat it with respect.The Bedlington Terrier has proven to be able to cope with various challenges in the world, so it can in theory be adapted to many different needs.

Size/Appearance

The Bedlington Terrier is an elegant and agile dog with a slightly rectangular build. The head is narrow, deep and rounded with a silky crest over the skull. The line from the nape of the neck to the tip of the muzzle is straight and unbroken.Nose cartilage and eye color vary depending on the coat color. The ears are set low and hang close to the cheeks with short hair and fringes at the bottom. The chest is deep and wide, and the back is naturally arched over the lumbar region. The tail is of medium length, elegantly curved and should not be carried over the line of the back. The movements are characteristic: Dancing, light and springy at a slow pace, and galloping at a high pace.

Fur grooming

The coat of the Bedlington Terrier must not be neglected. The breed has a dense, thick and flaxen coat that does not shed, and many allergy sufferers tolerate the breed well. The fur should be cut at least every three months, preferably more often.To prevent tangles, the fur should be thoroughly brushed with a carder 1-2 times a week. If necessary, especially in connection with clipping, the dog should be bathed. The main principle for the Bedlington Terrier’s hairstyle is to follow the body’s lines as closely as possible.

History

Like most other terrier breeds, the Bedlington Terrier also originates from the British Isles, specifically Northumberland. In this rugged landscape, there were various types of terriers that were supposed to keep pests away from homes and farms, and could also be used for fox hunting, badger hunting and poaching.In the late 18th century, the coal mines attracted settlers, who brought their own dogs, which included brindle terriers and sighthounds. The mixing of these dogs with the local dogs was the origin of the first Bedlington Terriers.
